Curry powder tastes like a generic flavoured curry. But what exactly is that? It has earthy flavours from cumin, turmeric, and bay leaf, but it’s also slightly sweet and spicy from the cinnamon, nutmeg, and cloves. Although they’re not the only spices that make up the curry flavour, there can be up to 20 herbs and spices that are used to create the savoury and sweet combination. It can also vary on spice levels; milder ones contain black pepper, while red chillies are included in spicier versions. Given the flavour combination, curry powder is often a hit when it comes to Indian and Southeast Asian cooking.
